Behemoths of Thera: Hunt

Behemoths of Thera: Hunt

In the world of Thera, great beasts of enormous size roam the land. Searching. Watching. Hunting.

Hunt is a new mechanic to the game of Eternal, debuting in Behemoths of Thera.

When a unit or weapon Hunts, the enemy player will discard the specified number of cards from the top of their deck and the hunter receives +1/+1 for each non-power discarded that way. If any power were discarded this way, you will also draw an Advantage that gives +1 power for each.

So when you play your Cautious Mantis, you might find yourself with a 6/6, a 5/5 and an Advantage that gives +1 power, or a 4/4 and an Advantage that gives +2 power, depending on what the opponent discarded. If they discarded no cards, such as due to having a player Aegis, then Hunt will not provide any benefit (apart from breaking the Aegis).

Swift means “This spell doesn’t give your opponent a chance to respond.” It is currently only found on Advantage. To keep the game moving smoothly, Hunt abilities are also not respondable.

Summons aren’t the only way to Hunt. You’ll find all sorts of ways to Hunt in Behemoths of Thera. Some cards, such as Blurwing Raider, can even Hunt multiple times in a game, growing larger and larger until dealt with, or perhaps simply providing you with the Advantage you need.

Spells can even help your units Hunt. On the Prowl is an expensive way to give a unit Killer, but it just might get bigger in the process. And if not, at least you’ll have an Advantage to make a more expensive play earlier than you might have otherwise. Do you take the risk and play it on something smaller than your target and hope for the +2/+2? Or do you play it on something larger to ensure your unit will be large enough in case you Hunt power?

Of course, the beasts of Thera aren’t the only ones who hunt to survive; the people do too. Some units like Quinn even care about your other units that Hunt. Perhaps you’ll try and find a way to make the same unit Hunt again and again to give it as many battle skills as possible. Or maybe just make as many different units hunt as you can, sharing the benefits.

Hunting can provide you with many benefits over the course of the game. Whether it’s simply having units that get bigger and bigger, or by being able to play more expensive cards earlier due to the Advantages you’ll earn throughout the game. How will you Hunt your foes when Behemoths of Thera arrives on January 18th?
