Eternal Expedition Rotation

Eternal Expedition Rotation

We hope you all enjoyed the conclusion to the Theran storyline told through Eternal Chapters. But now that Kaleb and the Skycrag Six’s adventures in Thera are over, let’s go over our plans for what’s coming next, beginning with some big updates for the Expedition format on April 9th.

Expedition

To keep Expedition fresh, we will be rotating sets more frequently, approximately every three months, with the first rotation happening next week on April 9th. We’ll be keeping an eye on things and tweaking as-necessary, but the goal is to provide fresh and exciting Expedition formats while still allowing them to remain active for long enough that players don’t need to completely change their decks too often.

Additionally, Expedition will be expanded to include three or four sets (and their corresponding expansions), allowing for a greater diversity in card pools while still being more restrictive than Throne’s “anything goes” format.

On April 9th, the expedition format will look like this:

  • Battle Lines (and Separate Ways)
  • Defiance (and Homecoming)
  • Dark Frontier (and The Trials of Grodov)
  • The Expedition Vault
  • Expedition Chapters (More on this below)

The Defiance and Dark Frontier sets will bring classic mechanics like Amplify, Twist, and Shift into Expedition, and even a different way of accessing Markets. Smuggler fans rejoice!

The rotation following that will remove Battle Lines and add a new set (no spoilers as to which just yet!). The rotation after that will add a fourth set without removing any sets! And the rotation after that will remove Defiance and Dark Frontier and add a new set. And so on and so forth:

Additionally, starting with Eternal Chapters 38 (The Rains of Linrei) new chapter cards will not be associated with any specific set. Instead, they will be added to the new “Expedition Chapters” set filter. These cards will be legal in Expedition for the foreseeable future, despite the coming and going of other sets.

In the future, we may make some small changes to the Expedition Vault to accommodate these Expedition changes, but no changes will be made for this first rotation.

Draft and League

To keep draft fresh, it will be updated alongside the Expedition rotations and involve two packs each of the two most recent sets added to Expedition. So on April 9th, the draft format will be Dark Frontier, Defiance, Defiance, Dark Frontier. And in Early July, this will be Mystery Set A, Dark Frontier, Dark Frontier, Mystery Set A. etc.

Leagues will continue to start on the first of each month and last the entirety of that month, with no major changes. But the sets chosen for each league will be geared more towards helping people build their Expedition collection. We’ll be sure to shake things up from time to time, however, so do expect to see a variety of sets making their way into League!

Gauntlet and Forge

We already started periodic Gauntlet and Forge resets earlier this year. Going forward, Gauntlet and Forge reward progress will be resetting alongside each Expedition rotation.

Additionally, Forge will have card pools based on the latest two sets added to Expedition (similar to Draft). So look forward to Defiance and Dark Frontier cards in Forge soon!

Store

To accommodate the Expedition changes, we will also be making the following changes to the store:

  • The Community Store’s pack section will match the current Expedition legal sets at the time.
  • The campaigns/expansions associated with the two most recent sets added to Expedition will be offered at a discounted price. So on April 9th, this will be Homecoming and The Trials of Grodov.
  • Three theme decks will come out with every Expedition rotation, with cards from across any Expedition legal sets (though not their expansions).
  • We will continue to put out additional Chapter Books every six chapters, as normal.
  • Sets that are added will have discounted boxes until the next rotation.

Reverts

Expedition and limited formats can’t have all the fun, though. So our last order of business will be to revert a few past nerfs to add a little more variety to Throne! Here’s the full list of reverts:

  • Argenport Instigator (From 2S 3/2 to 2SS 3/3)
  • Bisma, Revered Elder (Regaining “Entomb: Give one of your units Bisma’s battle skills.”)
  • Blightmoth (From 3SS to 2SS)
  • Bulletshaper (From 3FJ 3/3 to 2FJ 2/3)
  • Champion of Fury (From 1/1 to 2/1)
  • Channel the Tempest (From 9PPPP to 8PPPP)
  • Elysian Pathfinder (From 7TTT to 5TT)
  • Elysian Trailblazer (From 7PPP to 5PP)
  • Frontier Jito (From 2F to 1F)
  • Gentle Grazer (From 5TTT with “Summon: Play a random non-power card with cost 3 or less from your deck.” and “Corrupted 5” to 4TTT with “Summon: Play a random non-power card with cost 2 or less from your deck.” and “Corrupted 6”)
  • Rizahn, Greatbow Master (From “Lifesteal while you have six or more spells in your void.” to “Lifesteal while you have three or more spells in your void.”)
  • Ziat, Steelwarren Reeve (From 4/2 to 4/4)

Note that Argenport Instigator, Bulletshaper, and Gentle Grazer’s reverts are partial sidegrades, so any crafted copies will be available for a refund.

We will be watching the results of these reverts carefully in the coming weeks in case anything gets out of hand, but are hopeful these reverts will help shake up the Throne meta in a positive way.

That’s it for our immediate changes to Eternal. You may need to restart your game client on April 9th to get the changes, along with the new chapter mission. We hope you look forward to them and can continue enjoying the various formats of Eternal!
