What lies even deeper than the catacombs? Adventurers who dig too greedily and too deep may just find themselves in a new realm altogether; one that’s filled with valuable treasure — and danger to match it!

Welcome to Clank! Catacombs: Underworld! Last time, we took a look at Clank! Catacombs and how it evolved with the Lairs and Lost Chambers expansion. But what’s actually waiting down there below the Depths? Join us as we take a brief tour through the underworld, and be sure to keep an eye on the Kickstarter campaign for new Design Diaries from designer Paul Dennen!

Step Into the Underworld

Far below the Depths lies a deeper domain filled with riches and danger, represented by a central tile distinct from the catacombs. This is the underworld, a new layer of the dungeon just waiting to be explored. However, one does not simply walk into the underworld – mysterious new ladders have appeared throughout the catacombs, acting as a ticket to the world below, and maybe the only ticket out! Legends tell of other ways to enter and exit the underworld… could these also be hidden somewhere in the Depths?

Pay the Toll or Meet Your Doom

Underworld locals don’t take kindly to freeloaders, so be prepared to pay a toll for the time you spend down there. And before you reach for your wallet, you should know that your gold won’t do you much good; undercoins are the currency of choice downstairs so you’d better keep an eye on opportunities to earn them! If you’ve got none to hand over, the servants of the underworld are sure to make a stink about it – so much so that it may even catch the attention of a certain skeletal dragon!

The Guardian of the Underworld

In the heart of the Underworld, the fearsome Kerberos (Kerbie, for short) guards something precious. There are some who say that this treasure isn’t an artifact itself, but something that nonetheless provides a unique prosperity of its own to its lucky finder.

There’s only one way to find out! The player who is bold enough to defeat Kerberos will not only keep the three-headed beast as a valuable trophy, but will also get first dibs on the loot!

Underworld Treasures

Choose Your Fate: What do the Fates have in store for your future? Find out by grabbing a fate card from the aptly-named fate rooms! Will you fulfill your destiny by satisfying the condition of the card? Or will you decide you don’t believe in any of this “fate” crap and forge your own path instead?
The Underworld Artifact: In the myths of old, there are whispers of an ancient artifact that has a permanent home in the realm below. Could this be the legendary Magic Lyre? In a dungeon full of uncertainty, an artifact with a known location could be just what the doctor ordered.
Shopping for Souvenirs: Along the way, you might find yourself passing through some underworld markets, with special wares that you won’t find in the catacombs. What kinds of new boons might be waiting for you in the Jester Cap or the Gauntlets of Destiny? You’ll have to find out for yourself, but remember: all sales are final!

Friends, Foes, Highs and Lows

The underworld has denizens of its own, some friendly, others not so much. You may end up earning the companionship of an Imp Assistant who will be particularly interested in your Secret Tomes, but keep your eyes open and your swords drawn for Harpies, who are really not thrilled with your company. Though a nuisance, perhaps their trophies could fetch a fine price?

You’ll also find some unique geography in the realm down below. Towers offer a lovely view for resting travelers, and one might just feel lighter after shedding their burdens into the mystical waters of the Underground Lakes. We’ve heard rumors that these features have recently been spotted in the catacombs, but we can neither confirm nor deny these reports.

The Underworld Beckons

This is where we have to bring our introductory tour of the underworld to an end, but we hope you’ve enjoyed the sights, smells, and fun facts.
