Since the release of Clank! Digital, deck-building adventurers have been pilfering pixelated plunder in the perilous passages of dragons’ lairs and in the deep undersea dungeons of Sunken Treasures. And now, the upcoming Mummy’s Curse expansion brings you to a new locale: the scorching sands of the desert!
Two new maps just waiting to be raided are coming your way, but this time, there’s more than just treasure waiting in the depths… there’s also a grumpy, immortal mummy who refuses to stay dead! Let’s unwrap this new expansion by taking a closer look at this bandaged baddie, the curses he loves to toss at intruders, and the new maps through which he wanders!
The Wandering Mummy
He’s the star of the show, and you’d best learn to enjoy his company, because haunting the board is his full-time job. And as a bonus, if you knock him down, he’ll just keep getting back again!
The Mummy starts in a random zone on the map, and throughout the game, he’ll move around the board. If you happen to be in any of the rooms within his zone, you can choose to throw down and fight. There’s a lot of loose change in those wrappings, and money is money, right? Fighting the Mummy with 2 Swords grants you 4 gold, but here’s the catch: this mummy loves his sweet, sweet cash, and if you rob it from him, you’ll be walking away with a Curse Token.
The titular Mummy’s Curse is, as it turns out, small enough to carry around in your pocket in the form of bite-sized tokens. But this is actually rather problematic, as the more you have on you, the more your final score will get walloped with penalties. Each Curse Token inflicts -2 points, so you’ll want to get rid of as many of them as you can before game’s end. Fortunately, you can do just that by besting the Mummy with 3 Swords in combat, which allows you to offload half your curses onto that undead jerk.
Mummy Movements
The undead need to fit in their cardio just as much as any of us, so you can expect the Mummy to roam around the dungeon while you’re looting. Mummy movements are triggered via the Pyramid Die, which rolls every time he is successfully defeated. This die determines which zone the Mummy will move to — if it’s somewhere new, he’ll be bringing a goodie bag of Curse Tokens along, granting one to every player occupying a room in the new zone. Best be on your watch!
There are more ways to trash your Curse Tokens and move the Mummy around… keep an eye out for useful cards in the Dungeon Row!
New Maps Ripe for Robbing
The Pyramid of the Ancients and Kittypatra’s Palace are your new haunts in The Mummy’s Curse, and each has its own unique little quirks. The Pyramid of the Ancients is quite literally a race to the bottom, where the most valuable artifact sits in the lowest chamber. Don’t want to go that far? No worries, the second most valuable artifact is much closer to the surface… so long as you’re willing to bury yourself in Curse tokens to grab it!
Meanwhile, the opulent Kittypatra’s Palace — said to house the remains of Mr. Whiskers’ mightiest ancestor — offers its own dilemmas that thieves will have to puzzle over. The fabled Supreme Monkey Idol sits near the top of the map, and players who race to it will have to choose whether to take the slower path down to the Depths, or jump straight down and get cursed along the way. Meanwhile, players chasing the more valuable artifacts will have to work through a lot of crystal cave blockage. Choose wisely! And, last but not least, be on the lookout for new Major and Minor Secrets and for a new Market Item that may prove useful if you’re getting beat up down there in the Depths. We won’t spoil the surprise!
