New Cards and Deck-Building in Clank! Digital: Sunken Treasures

New Cards and Deck-Building in Clank! Digital: Sunken Treasures

It’s time to expand your deck-building adventure! Sunken Treasures releases on May 21st, bringing new maps, mechanics, cards, and more to Clank! Digital!

It’s a good time to be a dungeon-diver! The Sunken Treasures expansion is coming soon to Clank! Digital, and with it, all kinds of new goodies! In our last preview for Sunken Treasures, we explored its two new watery maps, along with accompanying mechanics such as swimming, SCUBA gear, and more — but that’s just a portion of the new booty!

Clank! is, after all, a Deck-Building Adventure, and you can bet on finding plenty of new cards to play with in the new expansion. Let’s take a look at some of the 36 new cards that Sunken Treasures brings to the table, along with some of the exciting deck-building opportunities that come along with them!

Discard Mania!

One of the biggest recurring themes you’ll find in a lot of the new cards is the discard mechanic. Discarding effects compel you to discard a card in your hand, usually as a trade-off for some kind of benefit; this is nothing new to Clank!, but discarding gets a much bigger spotlight in Sunken Treasures. Let’s look at some of the possibilities!

Challenge Alert: Psst, want to jump right in and experiment with the new cards as much as possible? Challenge #1, Weighed Down, is a great way to dive right in! This Challenge doubles the amount of Sunken Treasures cards in the deck, and has you draw and discard every time you start a turn in a flooded room.

Discard Those Stumbles!

Even with just your starting hand, there’s always at least one good reason to pick up cards with discard effects: getting rid of those Stumbles! You can play your cards in any order, so with a “discard” card, you can toss a Stumble out of your hand before it gives you any of that nasty Clank!

Even in the beginning of the game where you’re sitting happy at 10 HP, a card like Medic can still be useful as an early grab to rid Stumble cards from your hand before incurring Clank!

Draw and Discard: Combo Heaven!

While there are a boatload of cards that include discard effects, you’ll also find many that prompt you to draw cards instead, and these can quite often combo with each other to a satisfying degree — especially when you’re dealing with some of the cards that allow you to do both at once.

Consider how bonkers your hand could get if you played a Silver Pearl, with Aspiration and Deep Dive waiting in your draw pile:

When all is said and done, you’ll have discarded four cards and gained eight… nine if you have the crown to satisfy the conditions on Aspiration! And just imagine if any of those nine cards also had draw effects? With the right deck-building in Sunken Treasures, your hands can get very big, very fast!

Play your cards right (heh), and you may just end up having hands that look something like this. Yowza!

Combo Even Harder With “When You Discard This” Cards

Your hand can get even more outrageous with the addition of “When you discard this” cards, which grant special bonuses when the card in question gets discarded.

There are many juicy synergies you can create with these cards, such as using Coin Purse to advance your Grand Plan, or turning one movement into three by pairing Climbing Gear with Short Cut:
Take the example play from the previous section, and imagine if four of the nine drawn cards were the ones shown in the above image. In one turn, from these cards alone, you’d be looking at +3 movement, a Market Item’s worth of gold, and whatever else you drew during that turn!

While the stars, of course, would have to line up just right for a super-turn like this to occur, it’s just one example out of many of the new deck-building potential that’s waiting for you in Sunken Treasures.

Challenge Alert: For a game heavy on draw and discard mechanics, try Challenge #6 – Recycling! This Challenge replaces all gems in the deck with Pearls, and the first card you discard each turn is returned to your hand!

Other New Cards in Sunken Treasures

Discarding — and the mechanics that synergize with it — are undoubtedly a large focus of the new cards in Sunken Treasures, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t good old-fashioned cards as well. Cards like the ones shown below will add fresh new variety to your games of Clank! Digital!

And, finally, it wouldn’t be Clank! if your dungeon-delving endeavors weren’t always accompanied by the very real possibility of imminent demise, so you can expect some new Monsters to be lurking in the watery depths.

The Goldfish, much like the Goblin, has a permanent home on the Dungeon Row. This baddie yields more gold, but also requires an extra sword and can only be slain in a flooded room. This little guy will join you in every game of Sunken Treasures! But other Monsters, such as the Sorcerer and Eye-in-the-Water will decide on their own terms when they want to appear on the Dungeon Row. Combined with the rest of the deck from the Clank! base game, endless possibilities await!
