New Cards and Deck-Building in The Mummy’s Curse

New Cards and Deck-Building in The Mummy’s Curse

Clank! A Deck-Building Adventure turns 10 years old this year, and as part of its birthday celebration, The Mummy’s Curse expansion is now available for Clank! Digital on Steam, the App Store, and Google Play!

We took a look at the new maps and mechanics of The Mummy’s Curse in our last preview — including the shambling Mummy himself — but Clank! is famously a deck-building adventure, so it’s time to turn our attention to the many new cards that will be joining you on your pyramid-plundering adventures!

Curses, Curses, Curses!

The wandering Mummy and his dreadful Curse tokens are fundamental mechanics of the new expansion, and as such, they have a variety of cards that interact with them. As a reminder, Curse tokens saddle you with -2 points for each one you’re holding at game’s end, and it’s not just the Mummy who’s handing them out!

True to the heart of Clank!, some new cards will invite you to push your luck, offering Curses as a healthy dose of risk to accompany enticing rewards. Canopic Jars lets you draw a whopping four cards, while new Gems such as Jasper, are worth a small fortune in points, but both grant a Curse as the asking price! On the flipside, if you’d rather be the one giving the Curses, consider inviting the Doomsayer to your deck. Make a little noise, and those pesky tokens will become everyone else’s problem.

Removing Curses

Notice how the latter two have the “Roll the Pyramid Die” Arrive effect? That’s another way that the new Dungeon Deck will spice up your life in The Mummy’s Curse. Even if no one wants to get near the Mummy, certain cards will ensure that he moves around whether you like it or not!

There’s one surefire way to get rid of Curse tokens, and that’s
fighting the Mummy. But if you’re running low on swords or don’t want to make the trip, certain cards can come in clutch. The Blessed Fountain and Ring of Wishes device cards offer a one-time panacea, while Kittypatra and Death Mask can help to remedy your Curse problem every time they circulate through your deck.

Challenge Alert! In the Divisive Party Challenge, the last slot of the Dungeon Row always contains a device card, and you’ll get a Curse every time an opponent uses a device in your zone. Those device cards you see above might just come in major handy!

You’ll want to keep an eye on how many Curse tokens you have, because aside from the obvious point loss, there are other cards that might interact with you in different ways depending on how many you have:

As a general rule, the less cursed you are, the better. Purify gives you a good reason to stay holier than your opponents, while the savage Scorpion Queen’s gold bounty reduces in value for each Curse Token you’re holding.

Having a hard time getting rid of them? The Book in the Dead can come in handy instead, granting a point for each Curse you have, effectively halving their point penalty to -1. Will you grab this card to reduce the weight of a sizable Curse burden you’re unable to get rid of? Or will you snatch it early on in the game and feel emboldened to be more cavalier with your Curses-grabbing? You decide!

Challenge Alert! The Mummy’s Blessing Challenge will dare you to think about Curses differently — whoever has the most at the end of the game loses half of them! Can you play your cards right and dump your Curses at the end of the game, leaving your opponents to dry?

Other Cards

While the titular Mummy and his Curse[s] are central to the spotlight in this expansion, you’ll find no shortage of good old-fashioned cards that play around with the familiar mechanics you already know and love.

Daring Explorer and Camel interact with secrets in new ways, potentially affecting the way you shape your escape route. Historian gives you a sweet, sweet trashing opportunity if you’re keeping an eye on your Clank!, and the Royal Bodyguard rewards you with tunnel privilege for carrying around a crown. Last but not least is the Bullwhip, because what would a thieving adventure be without some sweet new gear?

Challenge Alert! In the Lock and Key challenge, you can only take secrets if you have a Master Key… and you can’t win unless you’ve taken at least three secrets! In these kinds of situations, it really pays to have a Daring Explorer and a Camel around!
