Designing an expansion for a game like Invincible: The Hero-Building Game is like designing six expansions at the same time. While the core of the game remains the same, each episode you play through has its own identity, and its own spin on those core mechanics. You want each episode to be familiar, but also a unique experience.
This is something you could see in the base game — from having to wear down Machine Head’s defenses with specific types of powers, to preventing the Mauler Twins from escaping prison, to dealing with an actually invincible Omni-Man, there were truly a variety of games in that first box. Invincible: The Hero Building Game, Season 2 maintains this philosophy in its six new episodes, capturing the spirit of Invincible in ways that evoke the shows and comics, while nonetheless evoking thrilling new gameplay possibilities. Let’s take a look at a few of them! And, to get a good idea of the wild new abilities you’ll be able to wield in these episodes, don’t miss our last preview covering the four new heroes in Season 2!
Missile Command – A Test of Teamwork

Want to put your tactical teamwork to the test? You’ll get the chance in Missile Command! In this tense episode, you’re required to thwart three separate nuclear launches, but here’s the twist: you have to do all the thwarting in one round!
Sure, you have four rounds to try to get it right for the first launch, but you’ll only have two for the second… and then just one to stop that final launch, which requires even more thwart tokens. Does your team have what it takes to band together and play the objective and take down King Lizard by the end of it all? It only takes unthwarted launch sequence to end the scenario, so you better pick those powers carefully!

Oh, and don’t forget that you’ll have the ugly mug below wailing on you from the very beginning, who will delight in pummeling you with Falter Cubes if he’s not dealt with quickly. But you’ve already saved the world once, so this should be a piece of cake, right?

Space Evaders – Minion Mayhem

The Sequids are a lot of fun. They are absolutely terrifying. They explode into goo when punched. And they are kind of cute? What more could you want from a fantasy villain? In Space Evaders, you’ll get to face off against them… a whole lot of them!

There is a way to make the Sequids pack a little less of a punch… if you can manage to thwart the Neural Pulse Device three times over!
Making episodes feel different from another often comes down to one or two key rules being changed. In the episode above, we put a new kind of pressure on the thwarting mechanic. For a Sequid-based episode, the obvious answer was minions, and those minions would have to be scary. Enter two simple rules that completely change how minions work:
- There is no limit to the number of minions that can be placed in each zone.
- Each minion ignores the first damage it takes.
With that in mind, we thought it would be best to include nine more minions in this expansion. What do you do when there are 10 minions in a zone? You cry, of course. You cry a lot.

See You Around, Kid

We won’t spill all the beans here and spoil all the fun. But yes, of course you will be getting thrown into different dimensions. And there may just be a kaiju-sized squid in the mix. Maybe. In our next and final preview, we’ll be talking about fun new superpowers to play around with. See you there!
