Behemoths of Thera: Nightfall & Spellcraft

It’s been a long time since new cards have caused Night to fall in the worlds of Eternal. And while Spellcraft has appeared more recently than Nightfall, it’s still been a few seasons since it was featured in Expedition. Both of these mechanics show up in Behemoths of Thera so if you need a refresher on either, you’re in the right place.

When you play a card with Nightfall, you make the game Night. Night will last until the end of your next turn. While it is Night, players draw an additional card and take 1 damage at the start of their turn. This damage cannot be blocked by Aegis and is not affected by any battle skills either player may have.

Playing multiple cards with Nightfall on the same turn won’t extend the Night, but playing them on later turns will, whether it’s you or your opponent. So if players keep playing Nightfall cards, the Night could last forever!

Insatiable Anteater draws you a card when the opponent draws their second card. Night is a way to ensure your opponent draws that second card on their turns, letting you take advantage of this right away. And the longer the Night, the more often you’ll benefit. How long do you want the Night to last?

Spellcraft means “When played, you may also pay its Spellcraft cost to play the spell.” In the past this was a mechanic only seen on attachments. But the people of Thera have learned the art of Spellcrafting to help them combat the beasts many times their size.

Youngblood Recruits can be played as a simple 4/2 Overwhelm for 3 power most of the time. But if the enemy player has an attachment you don’t like, such as Permafrost, you can spend just one extra power to play Ruin as well.

Olos, meanwhile, has a much more expensive Spellcraft. You might just want to play him early on without worrying about the Spellcraft to let your units Hunt. But later in the game, or if you have a lot of Advantages, you can pay an extra 4 to draw two cards with Wisdom of the Elders and keep the pressure on.

Night is a dangerous time in Thera, but by crafting the right spells, you just might survive. How will you handle the Behemoths of Thera in January?
