Behemoths of Thera: Versatile

Behemoths of Thera: Versatile

When fighting the mighty beasts of Thera, its people use whatever’s available to them. Be that a well crafted blade, or a femur scavenged from the remains of a dead beast nearby. They have to be able to quickly adapt and be creative with their weapons. Or in other words, they must be Versatile.

Versatile is a new skill to the game of Eternal, debuting in Behemoths of Thera. It only appears on relic weapons and allows you to play them on either your avatar, or on one of your units as a unit weapon.

Versatile weapons with skills can play very differently depending on what you play them on. Do you play Ancestral Edge on a unit to gain even more health, but open yourself to being two-for-oned by enemy unit removal? Or do you play it on yourself to take out an enemy unit while giving yourself a small health boost? As a bonus, any damaging spells or relics you use while wielding the Ancestral Edge will have Lifesteal as well.

In the leadup to Behemoths of Thera, we’ve already seen Murgo hand out weapons. But he saves his best wares for his best customers. By keeping the same cost as well as strength and health, Murgo could very well give you a 3 cost 5/5 relic weapon by choosing something like a Ravenous Thornbeast. What’s the best weapon you’ll find in Murgo’s stall?

When a weapon with Hunt is played, it does the hunting, not the wielder.  Ossuar Longbow has the capability to be quite the efficient weapon, becoming up to a 5/5 Overwhelm for 4. Will you play it as a powerful relic weapon to pave the way for your units? Or will you play it on one of them to make them a force to be reckoned with?

For those wondering about the rules quirks of relic weapons that can be played on units, Versatile weapons stop being a relic while in play on a unit. So cards like Bullseye won’t be able to affect them if played on a unit, but will if played on your avatar. This only extends to while they are in play on a unit, and they are always considered to be a relic in non-play zones for cards like Calibrate.

There are all sorts of Versatile Weapons in Behemoths of Thera, coming out later this month. You’ll even be able to try out a few early once our draft preview starts January 11th. How will you use your newfound versatility?
